Growing old with hope 34 The fi nal article in the series by Brian Edwards, from a talk at our November 2007 conference Dates for your Diary 39 With Christ 42 ERRATUM In our 2009/ 1 issue, the article on page was credited to Betty Mayhew, Evington supporter, when it should have been credited to Jean Mayhew ( no relation to Betty), who lives in a sheltered fl at at Evington. To have two lively contributors with the same surname in one location is unusual, and I hope the mix up won't put them off sending in more lovely stories and pictures. Northwood Missionary Auctions acts for Pilgrim Homes by auctioning donated items on our behalf. The auctions are run by a group of Christian Volunteers, including a professional auctioneer, so the low expenses of the auction can be met by sales of bric- a- brac. Items for auction are collected from any part of the country, and all proceeds go to Pilgrim homes at your request. To arrange for collection, contact Ruth Sowton on 01403 701944

Home truth 4 The blessings of shared beliefs. Choosing what really matters Louise Morse Recently I heard of an older couple of life- long Christians, where the wife developed dementia. The husband chose a secular care home for her because it was close to their home and convenient for him to visit. He sees the home as a mini- mission fi eld, and is delighted at the opportunities he has to evangelise there. Yet there is no Christian input for his wife, except when he visits. He notices how much he needs the spiritual support of his church and his home group. He takes his wife to church every Sunday, which he sees as an essential ' top- up' for her, but he sees no inconsistency between his own need for spiritual support and the lack of it in the home for his wife, even though her need now is infi nitely greater than his. If he can spend two hours every day with her that will help - but she will have no other spiritual input, no reinforcing of who she is in Christ, for the other eight or ten hours of her waking day.
