www. pilgrimhomes. org. uk 15 Training others to hold fast our standards Phil Wainwright, Director of Human Resources As I sat eating the excellent food at High Leigh Christian Conference centre last November, I mused on how familiar the surroundings seemed. I even seemed to know many of the staff almost as if they were my colleagues. I then realised that this was the fifth time I had been at High Leigh in 2008 and suddenly understood the " déja vu" kind of feeling I was getting. I am considering asking for my own suite of rooms! The year began, as it often does, with training for our Care Team Leaders, Care/ Nurse Managers and Registered Nurses, followed closely by similar training and updates for Senior Care Assistants. These groups of staff are a vital part of the running of our homes and provide essential support to the managers. Care Team Leaders and Care/ Nurse Managers are the " deputies" to the Home Managers and take a leading role in the oversight of the care staff within the homes. At our homes with nursing care, the registered nurses use their professional skills to provide day- to- day oversight of the care staff, whilst senior care assistants supervise the carers in a practical way on each shift in the non- nursing homes. Sessions at these conferences will cover a wide range of topics from how to conduct appraisals to the challenges of caring for dementia sufferers and dealing with inspectors when they call unexpectedly. But just meeting together and sharing problems with colleagues from other homes is very valuable, as is a bit of fun and relaxation ( the
