news30eueuJuly/August 2017 | MicroscopyandAnalysisPark Systems has unveiled the Park NX12, described as an affordable versatile platform for analytical chemistry and electrochemistry researchers and multi-user facilities.The system features a versatile inverted optical microscope-based SPM platform for scanning ion conductance microscopy, scanning electrochemical microscopy, and scanning electrochemical cell microscopy, in addition to AFM for research on a broad range of materials from organic to inorganic, transparent to opaque, soft to hard. "We just purchased Park NX12 because we wanted a high quality research grade, easy to use, versatile, and high resolution AFM/SICM/STM platform," comments Professor Yixian Wang from the Yixiam Wang Laboratory at Cal State LA."The Park NX12 was the only comprehensive platform that could perform all SPM techniques (AFM/STM/Pipette based SICM) while also utilizing IOM, for the nanoscale measurement flexibility we needed," he adds.The Inverted Optical Microscope (IOM) feature is designed to work with transparent samples using a pipette based technique and utilizes PinPoint mode in liquid for nanomechanical characterization.The system is suited for advanced research on materials such as membranes, organic devices and electronics, and biological and pathological samples.Zeiss has incorporated Quorum Technologies' Q150T carbon and sputter coater into its analytical solutions for mining, geosciences and oil and gas sectors.A key application of Zeiss's geosciences business, with its automated mineralogy software, is to provide data on mineral processing plant products from mining companies.Zeiss supplies a mine-site mineralogical analyser – MinSCAN – comprising sample preparation equipment and a " ruggedized" SEM.Key to reproducible sample preparation is a Quorum Q150T providing high resolution carbon and sputter coating.Each 30 mm standard sample requires reproducible, uniform, thin coatings.Carbon coating is used in perhaps 80% of the applications where mineral particles are being investigated.For oil and gas applications, the ability of having a thin coating becomes most important when making porosity measurements, and also reduces imaging artefacts.As Shaun Graham from Zeiss, Cambridge, UK, says: " The Q150 series has been chosen based on its proven extremely reliable performance in what is usually a difficult environment far removed from the traditional research bench.""
